Visit Britain

VisitBritain, the tourism body that markets the UK overseas and England to the British, has announced 80 redundancies (a cut that represent 17% of the organisation’s workforce of 482). These are reported to be sensible "administrative" and "business driven" cuts, but it raises the issue of the future of VB.
Rumour has it that the Labour Government is thinking about dropping VB and establishing up a set of national tourist boards – (does ETC ring a bell anyone?) possibly scrapping the RDA’s along with all the "new" structures that were introduced with the abolition of the previous BTA and some regional tourist boards.
I say - about time too!

VB has caused us and our clients nothing but a lot of money and grief since being established. I am sure that I am not alone in saying that there have been and still are numerous problems that never get ironed out. Too many people - not knowing what each other are doing or indeed not knowing what us, the little people do or need. We got on far better with regional Tourist Boards as it was more personal, informal, prompt and reliable, etc. The holidaymaker knew then what the "Tourist Board" was - we now still have to explain what "Visit Britain" is. I don't think I need go on.....

In fully agree with all comments in fact I have complained to VB and now with the latest bureacratic rubbish I will drop VB and go solo thanks to google I am doing very nicely thank you without a single booking through VB there is no need for all thuis rubbish on saelf assessment for accessability I already have it with a grading of M2 . Can we not all of us rebel against this bureaucratic nonsense. Kind regards to all fellow self caterers trying to make a little to susidise our retirement funds. If Brown gets wind of no doubt there will be a tax on it then we will all go freelance.Ian Hill

Personally I think all the grading boards a waste of value as far as advertising goes. I am with the AA and they have the audacity to claim to promote your establishment but when they come round to reassess you they downgrade you (the new star system) from 4 diamonds to 3 stars.... and they call this promoting and good advertising?! I think not. I complained, got reassessed but it was too late for their 2008 book and the 3* grading went in instead of the 4* star grading. I aks my customers on their opinions regarding grading and the majority say that they make their own assessment by how informative a website is, so more pictures and accurate descriptions can probably make a bigger diffenece to their decision than a pompous inspector. I say good riddance to VisitBritain... and may they all take a lesson from it if it happens.
